Celebrating vitality at Trinity, Saco

April 5, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Our visit to Saco was noteworthy for two things: first there was a baptism, six confirmations and a reception! And, second, the rector is David Robinson, who was a colleague of mine in the Diocese of Rochester and who preceded me to Maine by a year or so. It was great to visit such a lively congregation, and it was good to meet with an old friend.

Trinity, Saco, sits right on the main drag in Saco and like many of our congregations has very little parking. Fortunately there is is reasonable parking along the streets and a short walk brings one into a bright and bustling church. Trinity is one of our congregations whose singing is led by a praise band. There was a delightful mix of traditional hymns and praise music and strong singing by the congregation.

The morning began with an opportunity to meet with those being baptized and confirmed. We spent our time talking about what had led us to decide to confirm our faith. As always I found the time important and meaningful.

We then joined for a festive service, a bit awkward in the midst of Lent, perhaps, but the readings fit the occasion very well. The Sunday School joined for the baptism and confirmation and added their hands to the blessing of the water. It was a great symbol of the truth that we are all connected to Christ and one another by the font.

Following the service there was a special reception and a time for questions. Then I met with the Vestry. Trinity is very committed to growth and to reaching out to the larger community. It’s hard work, but progress is being made. And of course, there is concern about finances. But Trinity seems to be holding its own and moving forward.

The day ended with a quiet lunch at the home of the rector. Deacon Linda Cappers joined us for a time of conversation and fellowship.
